Art alone is reason enough to travel west.
Igor Savitsky Museum, Nukus
1966, on Savitsky's initiative
20th-century art, archaeology, crafts
Art alone is reason enough to travel west. In Nukus, the Igor Savitsky Museum brings together fine art, archaeology and the decorative and applied heritage of Karakalpakstan.
01
The museum's collections allow you to see the region from several angles at once: through artistic experimentation, excavated objects and things made for everyday life.

02
The museum's story is closely connected with Igor Savitsky's work in Karakalpakstan. In the 1950s he came here as part of an archaeological and ethnographic expedition, and his interest in local folk art gradually became his life's work. In 1966, a museum of art opened in Nukus on his initiative.
03
Today, alongside craft and archaeological heritage, the collection presents 20th-century art. That proximity changes how the region is perceived: an object made for daily life and a painting can reveal the same culture from very different angles.
